Sisters Welcome Visitors for “Doors Open” Event

Sister Mary Jeanne Quinlivan greeted guests in the San Damiano chapel at St. Francis Convent.

The doors of the convent were open to the public on September 28 as part of Historic Milwaukee’s “Doors Open” event. Over 350 visitors passed through the first floor of the convent and walked the grounds as they were greeted by Sisters and learned about the history of the congregation.

Sister volunteers were on hand to answer questions as guests explored Town Square, San Damiano, and the Cornerstone Gift Shop. They were handed maps to guide them to sites on the grounds. Outside, Sisters and volunteers from Habitat Healers staffed the Assisium, the Rieti Hermitage, the Grove of the Blessed Virgin Mary, urban forest, and the flower and vegetable gardens.

The weather cooperated as the sun shone brightly, with a slight breeze to keep things comfortable. Thanks to all who volunteered to make this event another great memory for the congregation’s 175th anniversary year!

The annual “Doors Open” event is an invitation to community members to explore Milwaukee’s architecture, history, and neighborhoods. St. Francis Convent was one of over 150 locations throughout metro Milwaukee that welcomed visitors.
